In an emergency
How to recognise a veterinary emergency and what to do. Please announce emergencies by phone on 06261 2395.
An emergency cannot be planned. So that you know what to do when it happens, we have gathered here how to recognise an emergency and how to act.
Most important first: call us before you set off, on 06261 2395. The Small Animal Practice Lisa Nierhaus in Mosbach works by appointment only, and an emergency too should be announced by phone. That way we can prepare everything, and you do not walk into an operation in progress.
Signs of an emergency
- Loss of consciousness, collapse
- Difficulty breathing
- Blue mucous membranes or a blue tongue
- Heavy or uncontrollable bleeding
- Very pale mucous membranes
- Seizures
- Sudden difficulty passing urine
- Persistent bloody diarrhoea or bloody vomiting, increasing weakness
- Sudden paralysis of the hind legs
- Eye injuries
- Swallowing foreign bodies or poisons (for example threads, socks, toys, grapes, chocolate or nuts), scalds, burns, heatstroke
- A serious road accident
- Maggot infestation
What is the out-of-hours service for?
- The out-of-hours service treats patients after an accident, with life-threatening illness or in severe pain. Extensive investigations are not carried out out of hours unless they are needed to stabilise the patient.
- Routine treatment, vaccination or the treatment of long-standing conditions that are not life-threatening are not emergencies and are not dealt with by the out-of-hours service.
What to know about payment and costs
- Bills for out-of-hours treatment must be settled on the spot, in cash or by card.
- Under the German scale of fees for veterinarians (GOT), an out-of-hours fee of currently 59.50 euros including VAT is charged for every case.
- Because of the higher rates out of hours, you should expect costs of at least 160 euros.
